The Keport Fire Department Ex-Chiefs

Prior to 1891 the department which consisted of only Hook & Ladder and Engine Company were controlled by each company's foreman or captain.  For many years it was thought that the fire marshall was in a command position, however research proves that he was only a fire investigator and inspector.  Prior to 1889, only the Hooks existed and their foreman was in charge of all fire duty in the town of Keyport.  The First five chiefs had no set term and ran continually as long as they could carry the vote.  In 1916 this changed and the Chiefs began serving two year terms.  In 1928 this changed again to the present system of a one year term as chief of the Keyport Fire Department.  Until 1898, their is no set record of any Assistant Chiefs.  In 1970 the position of Third Assistant Chief was added.  Currently Chiefs are elected in December and serve a four one year terms.  Starting as Third Assistant Chief and each year moving up until becoming the Chief of the Department.
